Armbrae Academy was founded in 1887 and is a co-educational PreSchool to grade 12 University preparatory school with 275 students. Armbrae offers a structured but informal atmosphere that provides students an opportunity to form close relationships with peers and teachers. Armbrae is a member in good standing of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) and is accredited by the Ministry of Education and Early Childhood Development for Nova Scotia to grant the Nova Scotia high school leaving certificate.

Head of Mathematics

We are looking for an experienced, skilled and innovative Head of Mathematics, who can inspire our students and faculty. You are actively engaged in planning, implementing and assessing student learning and you have a demonstrated ability to differentiate instructional practices for a diverse community of learners. In particular, your leadership will help us maintain the strength of our Math programme, while also providing all learners with new opportunities to stretch and be challenged. Your passion for teaching includes a commitment to the co-curricular life of the school. 

Competencies & Responsibilities 

Teaching and Learning

An overriding commitment to, and high aspirations for, rigourous and innovative approaches to teaching and learning in Mathematics classrooms; 

A solid curricular foundation that focuses on teaching and assessing student outcomes and providing support for colleagues in achieving the same; 

An understanding of assessment and reporting practices that focus on student growth and development, providing effective and continuous feedback for students; 

Contribute to the development of the online learning and assessment programs at the school;

An understanding of future directions of education, including 21st century learning skills, and the use of technology to improve collaboration, deep understanding and higher order thinking; 

Leading by example, employ pedagogies that ensure active engagement in authentic, purposeful learning that capitalize on and meet the diverse needs of all students.

Curriculum Development

Experience in leading course design, the development of curriculum scope and sequence from Preschool – 12 and best practices in assessment for all ages;

Develop resources for learning outside the classroom; 

Assist colleagues in finding appropriate high-quality resources;

Lead in the development of curricula that add breadth and depth to strategic topics, but also provide enrichment and reach ahead opportunities for students

Staff Development

Act as a coach to teachers and other classroom-based professionals; 

Facilitate effective teaching and learning through empowering and motivating teachers within an environment of trust and respect. Help others learn new systems, processes and programs; 

Use effective techniques to define outcomes and expectations of the teaching team and monitor/redirect as required; 

Develop the capacity of colleagues to produce excellent teaching and learning resources; 

Demonstrate a willingness to share ideas and perspectives and encourage others to do the same. Present information, analysis and ideas in writing in a clear and convincing manner; 

Work with newly qualified teachers to develop their skills; 

Work with colleagues across the school. 

Leadership

Build trust, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments and behave in a consistent manner. Develop, maintain and strengthen partnerships with others inside and outside of the school and community who can provide information, assistance and support;

Lead by example as a teacher and a coach achieving high standards of pupil attainment and progress, behavior and motivation through effective teaching; 

Challenge the teachers in your department to become/continue as excellent teachers;

Support the development and maintenance of whole school policies and practices to ensure consistent application;

Maintain clear expectations and high standards of professionalism;

Attend school events and activities.

Experience & Qualifications

  • A member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Office of Teacher Certification and hold an endorsed Teacher Certificate (Elementary or Senior) or equivalent provincial or other certification. 
  • 5+ years teaching experience.
  • A desire to improve and develop, both as a reflective practitioner and as a team coordinator.  
  • A comprehensive understanding of current educational practices in the areas of curriculum planning, implementation and assessment practices.
  • A toolbox of teaching strategies for facilitating student success including those with different learning needs. 
  • Collaborative and energetic with a passion for teaching.
  • A commitment to continued professional development and growth.
  • Strong inter-personal, organizational, time-management and communication skills. 
  • Energy, commitment and a readiness to participate in the co-curricular program and the diverse life of the school community.
  • Experience working in an independent school would be an asset. 

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Senior School Director but will also work closely with the Middle School Director and the Lower School Director.

  • Relevant university qualifications preferably at the graduate level.
  • A member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Office of Teacher Certification and hold an endorsed Teacher Certificate (Elementary or Senior) or equivalent provincial or other certification. 
  • A comprehensive understanding of current educational practices in the areas of curriculum planning, implementation and assessment practices.
  • A toolbox of teaching strategies for facilitating student success including those with different learning needs.

Substitute List

We are looking for exceptional Occasional/Substitute Teachers to cover a variety of academic areas in both our Senior School and Junior School. The successful candidates will be responsible for covering classes and continuing the program of learning as well as creating an engaging learning environment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Office of Teacher Certification and holds an endorsed Elementary Teacher Certificate or endorsed Secondary Teacher Certificate or equivalent provincial or other certification.
