Armbrae Academy was founded in 1887 as the Halifax Ladies' College. Originally located at another site, Armbrae is today situated at 1400 Oxford Street, across from Dalhousie University. The School is now co-educational from Preschool to 12 and is open to students of any race, creed, or nationality.

As the seat of the provincial government, Halifax is richly endowed in historical and cultural resources. Its galleries, museums, historic monuments, libraries, colleges, and universities serve as a valuable adjunct to the educational programme of the school.

Today the Junior and Senior school population of 245 is under the guidance of a faculty of 27 members. The atmosphere is structured but informal, and as such provides the student with an opportunity to form close relationships with teachers, and with other students.

Armbrae Academy is a non-profit organization incorporated by an Act of the Nova Scotia Legislature and governed by a 17-member Board of Governors. The Board is composed of parents, alumni, faculty, and members of the community.

2012 John Stone Award
Armbrae Academy is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2012 John Stone Award. The award was established in 2010 to recognize the qualities of humanity, empathy, ethics, respect for the dignity of others and/or service to others. Students apply for the award by presenting a case for a humanitarian leadership opportunity. This could be through an existing organization, or a project of their own design. This year's winner is Stephanie Robertson-Kempton, a Grade 11 student who feels passionately about supporting the Cambodia Arts and Scholarship Foundation. Stephanie's project will aid in the education of girls and young women who are typically excluded from educational opportunities.
